that he would have detested. He loved the 
individual, iconoclastic maverick’s mask that he 
wore. And so yes, it would have been the worst of 
times and yes, it would have been the worst of 
times for McLuhan. And were he alive—although no 
one can put words in his mouth—he would be 
feasting on all the ground to critique, but fasting 
from the stimulus of sensory overload, and 
especially from the artificial and increasingly 
synthetic world in which we live. At least that’s one 
humble view.
